Abstract.
In modern hierarchical galaxy formation scenarios, the smallest objects form first and merge to produce larger structures. In this review, I summarize some of the properties of the currently smallest dwarf galaxies of the Local Group and discuss whether they represent surviving examples - or close analogs - of the original galaxy building blocks of the early Universe.
