Abstract.

Since no Pop III stars have been observed, the only way for finding the abundances of light elements in the first stars is to extrapolate the abundance trend found in objects of increasing ages, and in this procedure, the ultra metalpoor stars carry an exceptional weight. The examination of the trends of the light element abundances shows that a number of problems are unsolved, and the VLT will certainly bring a useful contribution.
