Het doel van nierfunctievervangende therapie is het overnemen van de homeostatische functie van een falende nier. Nierfunctietherapieën beogen dus controle van de vochtbalans, de elektrolythuishouding, het zuur-base-evenwicht en de eliminatie van uremische toxinen.
