Summary
Paint Effects is indeed a unique tool - its uses are only limited by user ingenuity and the varied selection of brushes already available, from plants to laser glares, pay testament to this. Paint Effects can be used as a novel alternative to creating hair and fur, will animate to a certain level of performance and even have reactions to velocity changes from the use of springs. Paint Effects can be integrated into most rendering jobs for little real cost in terms of time and speed and can be easily broken up into passes and composited (even by Maya’s renderer). When considering making a brand new Paint Effects brush for a scene, it can be worthwhile starting with a brush that may resemble the desired effect either in terms of tube growth, colour use or both. The ability to texture all of the tubes independently of each stage of growth means that a lot of short cuts can be made in terms of look without having to model the effect with twigs and flowers.
