Precision Contouring Control of Multi-Axis Feed Drive Systems

Abstract

In order to improve the contouring accuracy in machine tool control, using the contour errors, which is defined as tracking error component orthogonal to desired contour curves, as feedback signals is known to be effective. This paper presents a new contouring control method for multiaxis feed drive systems. The method is applicable to any smooth contour curves and achieves better control performance with small control input variance compared to the conventional methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by experimental results with the circular and non-circular contour curves.
