Sacrospinous Vault Suspension and Abdominal Colposacropexy

Abstract

Owing to advances in medicine and health care, women are enjoying longer life expectancy. The average North American woman will probably live one-third to one-half of her life after menopause. Menopausal women are not only living longer but also enjoying better quality of life; they are remaining active physically, mentally, socially and sexually. With advancing age, the prevalence of urinary incontinence and genital prolapse increases. Because women expect to be in the best shape possible, they are demanding help with these problems. With the advent of hormone replacement therapy, sexual stimulants made from herbs and medications such as sildenfil (Viagra), and cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries, many women are remaining sexually active well beyond menopause. Advances in anesthesia, pharmacology and support technology have allowed many of the previously so-called surgically unfit patients to undergo surgery successfully.
