Incremental Value of Imaging Structure and Function

  • Chapter
Positron Emission Tomography

Conclusion

The diagnostic implications of integrated PET/CT imaging include improved detection of lesions on both the CT and FDG-PET images, better differentiation of physiologic from pathologic foci of metabolism, and better localization of the pathologic foci. This new powerful technology provides more-accurate interpretation of both CT and FDG-PET images and therefore moreoptimal patient care. PET/CT fusion images affect clinical management by guiding further procedures (biopsy, surgery, radiation therapy), excluding the need for additional procedures, and changing both inter- and intramodality therapy.

The combined approach of X-ray attenuation correction and image fusion with FDG imaging is a new and powerful diagnostic tool for nuclear medicine imaging, radiation therapy, and surgical planning. The applications for this technology, that have emerged with FDG as the radiotracer, will expand even further with the array of new promising PET tracers and in the field of cardiology.
