Abstract
In one of his frequent rambles through the Garden District in 1854, Thomas Wharton, the architect and diarist, watched workmen putting the finishing touches on James Robb’s palatial residence. This “grand square mansion,” he concluded, “is destined to take the lead of all competitors.”1
