Abstract
Having spent the 1960s making abstract paintings, Peter Hutchinson suddenly dropped the medium in 1968 and joined those artists who were fleeing the art world for sites far from the traditional gallery. Quickly achieving prominence as a builder of earthworks, Hutchinson did much to open up the possibilities for art in the aftermath of Minimalism. A restless innovator, he has been particularly successful in reshaping the relations between language and photographic imagery. Among his recent works, I especially like Palindrome I (2002), which has the look of an outsized postcard. Sent to no one in particular, it is meant for all of us.
