Summary
In this chapter, we discussed the methods of palmprint acquisition, offline and online approaches. Before the online palmprint acquisition device is developed, all the palmprints are obtained offline. Offline palmprint acquisition means that the palmprint data is not directly input to the computer. Rather, it is first inked on paper, and then a scanner is used to digitize the signal and store it in a computer for further processing. Online palmprint acquisition is the most direct way to digitize palmprint data, without the need for a third medium like paper. Four online palmprint acquisition devices developed by us are revealed. Different databases were built, in which palmprint images were obtained using both methods, for the experimental testing. We also provided information on different palmprint databases, including the image size, number of images, and resolution. In later chapters, different algorithms are tested on the palmprint databases.
