Handbook of Advanced Magnetic Materials

Abstract

The neutron is an elementary particle with a particular combination of properties that makes it uniquely versatile as a condensed matter probe. These properties are:

  1. (1)

    It is not electrically charged;

  2. (2)

    It has spin 1/2 and a magnetic dipole moment of μ′N = − 1.913μN(with the nuclear magneton μN = 5.051 × 10−27 J/T);

  3. (3)

    It has mass (m n = 1.675 × 10−27 kg).
