Handbook on Data Envelopment Analysis

Part of the book series: International Series in Operations Research & Management Science ((ISOR,volume 71))

Abstract

The performance of decision making units (DMUs) that provide educational services has been a concern in the academic and policy arenas. The topic is of the utmost importance considering the amount of money that is devoted to this public sector activity. Recent reform initiatives have moved away from equity towards accountability and efficiency. Application of data envelopment analysis (DEA) to the education sector is natural given these recent concerns. Standard DEA models fail, however, due to the heterogeneity of DMUs arising from socioeconomic differences. Models suitable for application to education have been developed and will be discussed in this chapter.
