Endothelins as Basal Ganglia Transmitters

  • Chapter
Neuroacanthocytosis Syndromes

Abstract

The role of endothelins in the central nervous system has been relatively little studied and most work has focused on possible ischemic/neurotoxic effects. We provide evidence that endothelins play a physiological role in the striatum, stimulating dopamine release. In addition, other studies suggest that endothelins may have growth factor properties in striatum and other parts of the brain. Loss of endothelin production could therefore have adverse effects on motor control and could induce neurodegeneration.
