VLBI Observations of Gravitational Lenses

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry ((NAII,volume 135))

Abstract

This lecture covers VLBI observations of gravitational lenses, and addresses the particular aspects of gravitational lens studies for which VLBI has proved a useful technique. These include conforming strong gravitational lens “candidates”, uncovering the details of complex “merging” images, and providing additional constraints for modelling the lens mass distribution. Examples from a number of known gravitational lens systems are given. Part of the lecture is devoted to considering the special problems of VLBI observing, correlation and analysis when the “source” consists of multiple compact sources in a relatively wide field.
