5.6 Conclusion

Lamto vegetation encompasses savanna areas with contrasting tree densities, mixed with moist and dry forest areas. The different savanna types are roughly organized according to topographical transects. The grass layer is dominated by grass tussock species from the Andropogonaea family, whereas four species dominate the tree layer. Herbaceous species exhibit different phenological patterns. In contrast, trees are all deciduous but exhibit a marked time variability of leaf fall. Such variability has important implications for carbon cycle since most of the leaves falling before fire are burned and have no chance to contribute to soil organic matter accumulation.
