Summary

Burn injury results in both physical and psychological trauma. Perhaps among all the trauma care disciplines, effective burn management demands an extended and interdisciplinary team. Optimal outcomes can be obtained only by a comprehensive and systematic approach. Attention to detail in burn assessment and early resuscitation set the stage. An accurate as possible assessment of burn size and depth is necessary for a rational resuscitation plan. It also facilitates decisions relating to possible transfer to a tertiary center and estimation of prognosis. Planning for early wound closure, adequate nutritional support to counter hypermetabolism, and coordinated rehabilitation and pain management efforts yield the best results.
