Abstract
Understanding the nature of communication and the communication process is critical for the implementation of health communication initiatives. This chapter reviews the various dimensions of communication and discusses their relevance for healthcare. The need to distinguish between communication aimed at individuals, organizations and communities is emphasized. This chapter also discusses the goals of communication and outlines the various steps in the communication process. Critical success factors for effective communication are specified and the barriers to communication discussed.
