Abstract
All major crises that disturb nature or fray the fabric of society risk producing disasters, which, in turn, lead to health problems of considerable gravity. Likewise, major widespread diseases can lead to disastrous situations with serious environmental, economic, and social consequences. To varying degrees, no natural phenomena and no social structures can escape periodic disturbances, but wise ecological management, equitable human relationships, and basic sanitary precautions can greatly diminish their physical, social, and personal impact.
