Abstract

Because of social progress, improved medication, and increasing life expectancy, chronic diseases—whether among the elderly or the young—are becoming more prevalent, their treatment more demanding, and more important to health care delivery and decisionmaking. The medical profession and society are being forced to develop new strategies and more imaginative approaches to meet the growing needs.
