This chapter will review the current options and trends in the pharmacologic management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The overall treatment goals for both type 1 and type 2 DMis to maintain tight glycemic control while minimizing the risk of hypoglycemia. This chapter will examine different types of insulin, insulin regimens, and insulin delivery systems utilized in the management of type 1 DMpatients. In the discussion of type 2 DM, the characteristics of the oral medications available for treatment will be reviewed, as well as treatment strategies and rationale for combination therapies.
