Laparoscopic Instrumentation

  • Chapter
Laparoscopic Surgery of the Abdomen

Conclusion

Laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery is a challenging and technically demanding procedure. The research and development of advanced laparoscopic instrumentation allows the possibility of current surgical techniques. Laparoscopic instrumentation is the key to performing safe and effective surgery. Yet, further advancements are still needed to optimize complete intracorporeal surgery. Some future improvements include a high-resolution camera with lens washer that does not limit vision, better atraumatic grasping instruments for the intestine, decreased cost, and eventual decreased diameter of instruments to fit 5-mm port sites. As technology improves, advanced laparoscopic surgery may incorporate three-dimensional viewing, virtual reality, robotics, or human interface technology. Nevertheless, laparoscopic instrumentation plays a vital role in advanced laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery, and further research and development is imperative.
