Summary

The guenon monkeys (Tribe Cercopithecini) represent a relatively recently evolved, widespread, and taxon-rich group of species with a diverse morphology, ecology, behavior, and social organization. Not surprisingly, the guenons also have a complicated and controversial taxonomy. The most recent taxonomy lists four genera, 23 species, and 55 subspecies (Grubb et al., 2002). Given the large number of species and the considerable variability within and among the species, the guenons represent an excellent taxonomic group within the Order Primates for the study of patterns linking morphology, ecology, behavior, and social organization. Much more research on the systematics and taxonomy of the guenons, both at the species and generic levels, must be undertaken if the current biodiversity represented by the guenons is to be appreciated and conserved.
