Abstract

Terms from the transport equations of the grid-scale (GS) and subgrid-scale (SGS) kinetic energy are analyzed both instantaneously and statistically in order to understand the role of the coherent vortices in the GS/SGS interactions in free shear flows. In the end, a new light emerges on the role played by these structures in these complex processes. The implications for SGS modeling are discussed.
