Conclusion
Are direct responses to stalkers more effective than indirect methods? Is guidance from friends and co-workers as effective as counseling from professionals? Unfortunately, research to date has shown that neither approaches are effective (Cupach & Spitzberg, 1998, p. 255). Jason, et al. (1984), in a study of women who were harassed after ending a relationship with men, reported that direct approaches were no more effective in stopping the intrusions than passive styles of responding. Likewise, studies of sexual harassment also show that confronting the perpetrators directly was no more effective than indirect techniques (Livingston, 1982).
