Abstract
Segmental isotopic labeling allows NMR active nuclei to be introduced selectively into a specific region(s) of full-length protein sequences. In this perspective we review briefly the technologies available for the segmental isotopic labeling of proteins and suggest how these strategies might be combined with current NMR techniques to study aspects of protein function that are often difficult to address using conventional structural analysis.
