Effect of drought stress and drought tolerance heredity on nitrogen efficiency of winter wheat

Abstract

Nitrogen efficiency of drought-tolerant sib-lines (DTSL) under drought stress was studied in pot experiments to provide knowledge on how to apply efficiently water and nitrogen in arid and semi-arid regions in China. Nitrogen efficiency ratio (NER), nitrogen uptake efficiency (NUpE), nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and nitrogen fertiliser utilization efficiency (NfUE) of a given variety decreased significantly with increasing drought stress. However, among the DTSL N efficiency of the line with a high ability to tolerate drought stress was remarkably greater than that of lines with low ability to tolerate drought stress. N fertilisation increased N efficiency of winter wheat more than drought stress and drought stress, in turn, more than heredity of drought stress. NER and NUE were more suitable to describe N efficiency of the crop than NUpE and NfUE. In arid and semi-arid regions of China, heredity of drought tolerance should be included in studies investigating the interaction between N efficiency and water management.
