Recommended Readings
Abel TM, Metraux R, Roll S: Psychotherapy and Culture. Albuquerque, University of New Mexico, 1987. The authors offer a view of the therapeutic process based on a psychodynamic model of human relationships and meanings.
Chrisman NJ, Maretzki TW (eds): Clinically Applied Anthropology. Dordrecht, Reidel, 1982. This edited volume describes the clinical contributions of applied anthropologists who conduct research and teach in health science settings.
Fadiman A: The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures. New York, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1997. This is a gripping narrative study in cross-cultural medicine. It traces the disparity in diagnosis and treatment between “epilepsy” and “soul loss” in a Hmong child and family from Laos. It is a tragic account of differences in understanding that became labeled as noncompliance.
Harwood A (ed): Ethnicity and Medical Care. Cambridge, Mass, Harvard University Press, 1981. This edited volume offers rich accounts of the role of cultural values, attitudes, expectations, language, and beliefs in a wide array of ethnic groups’ members’ health behaviors.
Henry J: Culture Against Man. New York, Random House, 1963. Henry critically examines family, education, values, political ideologies, attitudes toward aging, and much more in this classic work on U.S. culture.
Johnson T, Sargent C (eds): Medical Anthropology, ed 2. Westport, Conn, Greenwood Press, 1995. This encyclopedic volume represents a state-of-the-art review of the conceptual, methodological, and clinical issues in culture and medicine, including a focus on gender and health and HIV disease.
Stein HF: American Medicine as Culture. Boulder, Colo, Westview Press, 1993. Stein presents a description and interpretation of U.S. biomedicine as an occupational culture. Topics include values, metaphors, control, group dynamics in clinical decision-making, money and medicine, the process of becoming a physician, and the self of the physician.
Stein HF, Apprey M: From Metaphor to Meaning: Papers in Psychoanalytic Anthropology. Charlottesville, University Press of Virginia, 1987. Stein and Apprey offer interpretations of the intrapsychic story that is simultaneously represented and veiled by culture. They demonstrate how deceptively simple personal, familial, clinical, and larger cultural symbols condense complex ideas and feelings.
