Abstract

Co clusters, obtained in an Ag matrix by Molecular Beam Epitaxy and/or Ion implantation, were observed by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy. In the as-grown samples, we were able to confine small aggregates of size going from 2 up to 20 atoms/cluster. After thermal treatment we observed a size increase of the clusters up to 80 and 140 atoms/cluster. In the present study each configuration was characterized by distinguishing Co-Co and Co-Ag coupling; then this method permitted the investigation of the interior and of the interface contribution. We detected a structural transition from fcc to hcp when the size of the cluster is larger than about 100 atoms. High stability and preferential agglomeration in dimer ensembles were observed at concentrations in the range 0.10-0.70 at. %. The Co dimers as well as the larger Co clusters were found somewhat contracted (of few hundredths of an Angstrom) with respect to the standard Co-Co bulk distance.
