Fluctuations in Multicomponent Systems

Abstract

I give a brief review of particle and charge fluctuations in multicomponent systems. The long range nature of the Coulomb forces greatly reduce the fluctuations of the net charge Q A in a domain Λ⊂ℝd. In particular, while the variance of particle numbers in A grows like the volume, (Q A 2) grows only like the surface area of A.
