8. Conclusions
UMTS data services will be introduced in the turn of the century. The separation of core network and radio access network facilitates independent evolution of both parts. Any radio access technology can be interfaced with the GSM/UMTS core network, the most dominating core network globally.
In Europe UMTS air interface will be selected in the beginning of 1998. The target has been and still is to select only one air interface. Therefore, from the global perspective, a natural alternative would the asynchronous wideband CDMA with 5 MHz bandwidth offering wide area data rates up to 384 kbit/s. Alternative technologies are wideband TDMA, OFDM and hybrid CDMA/TDMA. However, a critical question for OFDM and hybrid CDMA/TDMA is the maturity of the technology and lack of global support. For GSM operators without new UMTS spectrum GSM384/EDGE, enhancement of the 200 kHz GSM carrier, will provide a way to offer UMTS services. In addition to these UMTS radio access technologies, wireless ATM, providing bit ratesup to 20 Mbit/s, could be integrated with GSM/UMTS.
