Abstract

We study the interaction of source and channel coding, and of coding and multiplexing techniques, given a multi-mode, Variable Bit Rate (VBR), and embedded source coding scheme. We estimate the coded bit-stream resistance to channel impairments and frame losses. Our aim is to increase network capacity while maintaining a smooth quality degradation at high loads and heavy interference. We show that, by exploiting the peculiar characteristics of the chosen coding technique, which allows scalability of the signal bandwidth and of the delivered bit-rate, it is possible to achieve a strong interaction between the system and the bit-stream. Both narrowband and wideband speech services are evaluated.
