Abstract
Although optical networking is a relatively young topic, this field has experienced explosive growth over the past few years. This growth has been fueled mainly by the demands for enormous bandwidth on our data networks, namely the Internet, to satisfy the high-speed applications of the network users. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is the current favorite technology for building optical communication networks since all of the end-user equipment needs to operate only at the bit rate of a WDM channel, which can be chosen arbitrarily, e.g., peak electronic processing speed. The state-of-the-art in designing optical WDM networks is reviewed in this chapter, starting with WDM networking evolution, and covering new WDM technologies, how to construct WDM networks, followed by recent trends in WDM research.
