Summary

Active networking offers a new paradigm for networks in which the packets can contain code fragments in addition to data that is executed on the intermediate nodes (switches and routers) of the network. The code carried by the packet may extend or modify node behavior enabling users and applications to tailor network resources for their immediate requirements. The goal of active networking is to increase the flexibility and customizability of the network and to accelerate the pace at which new networking service can be developed and deployed. Active networks will have an impact on almost all aspects of network operation and control. The ability to develop and deploy new, customized services benefits ad-hoc and wireless networks and mobile devices. Network infrastructure costs are reduced through self-configuration and management. The programmability of the network enables the deployment of innovative fault-tolerant algorithms to ensure survivability of network services and an improvement in the reliability of the network. Security is integrated “from the ground up” to create secure VPNs. Active networking also provides specialized processing for handling QoS requirements when used in conjunction with other networking technologies like ATM and SONet that are built for fast-path transport of data.
