Chapter Summary
In this chapter we looked at the problem of combining research and practice in network management. First, we provided a case study at Company X, wherein we used the method of Contextual Inquiry to bring out the structure of the operations. Next, we looked at topics of interest to researchers in network management. As an example, we looked at a research method that shows promise for increasing the efficiency of the operations at Company X. However, we argued that the method, and other research ideas, are slow to make their way into commercial production. Finally, we looked at reasons why that is so and looked at some general approaches for expediting the movement of research results out of the lab and into the commercial sector.
