Chapter Summary
In this chapter we studied the issues surrounding Internet2 GigaPoP management. We first described the goals of the Internet2 project, and then described an important component of Internet2 --- the GigaPoP. As a case study, we looked at the North Carolina GigaPoP. We described the topology of the NC GigaPoP, and then described a joint research project between Aprisma and North Carolina scientists that focuses on GigaPoP management. We saw that Internet2 GigaPoP management is quite similar to well-known network management practices, with the exception of managing the new applications and services that depend upon the GigaPoP. In that regard, we described four research programs at universities in North Carolina that contribute to application management, where such applications are complex, resource-intensive, and compete for GigaPoP resources.
