Chapter Summary
In this chapter we focused on the management practices of service providers. First we distinguished between a business network and a service network. Next we discussed the political and business landscape in the USA after AT&T deregulation in 1984 and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Those events affect the management practices of service providers. We saw that most service providers face a special challenge, viz. that the services they offer might depend upon networks over which they have no control. As a case study, we focussed on Vitts Networks in the USA. We described Vitts’ Protected Service Network and delineated the services Vitts provides to customers. We discussed Vitts’ management architecture using Spectrum, paying special attention to multi-domain management, alarm correlation, and service level management. Finally, response time management was explained in a fair amount of detail, after which we proposed a design and plan for integrating RTM systems with network management systems.
