Summary

The chapter discussed the basic concepts in queuing theory. A queuing system has one or more servers, arriving customers (or jobs), and queue for every server to hold waiting customers. The manner in which customers arrive, how they leave the queue to receive service, how service is provided, and how they leave the system is of interest in studying these systems. In operating systems, the server is the CPU and the customers are the jobs; the queue is used to hold jobs that wait for processing in the CPU.

This chapter also discussed the different performance measures that are estimated, and the performance parameters that need to be considered in studying operating systems. A simulation model was described that represents a simple batch operating system. Several simulation runs of the model were shown for different input parameters.
