Abstract
Growth factor proteins were covalently immobilized on various matrices to manipulate cells. It was shown that insulin and epidermal growth factor stimulated cell growth even after immobilization. Pattern-immobilization of growth factor proteins clearly demonstrated the stimulation by immobilized proteins. In other words, thistype of stimulation by non- diffussional growth factors enabled us to regulate tissue formation with artificial biomaterials. These stimulations by the immobilized growth factors niay mimick juxtacrine stimulation of membrane-anchored growth factors such as heparin-binding epidamal growth factor, transforming growth factor, aid tumor nectrosis factor. The stimulation was enhanced by coimmobilization with adhesion factors. In addition, by coimmobilization with thermosensitive polymers enabled the enhancement of cell growth and easy recovery of cultured cells by low ering temperature.
