Conclusion

Our studies confirm earlier findings of Dozois et al. 19978,and de Brito et al. 19999 about the occurence of necrotoxic and P or S fimbriated E. coli among enteric and extraintestinal isolates from suckling pigs, and provide additional evidence for similar properties of E. coli in diarrheal weaned pigs.

It was suggested that porcine enteric E. coli population may contain strains carrying pathogenicity islands more characteristic to human uropathogenic E. coli. The pathogenetic significance of such strains for weaned pigs remains to be investigated.
