Conclusion
Taurine is capable of forming moderately stable complexes with copper(II) in which it acts as a monodentate, N-donor ligand. However, it binds to copper(II) less strongly than its carboxylic analogue β-alanine. This is probably due to the decreased basicity of the amino group on taurine. Since zinc(II) and copper(II) have similar coordination behaviour taurine should also bind to zinc(II) under physiological conditions. However taurine would not be expected to bind to class ′a′ metal ions such as calcium(II) and magnesium(II).
