Abstract
In most of their applications, emulsion polymers are in the form of a coherent film. Consequently, the formation of films from polymer latices is a subject of great importance. The present report reviews the current state of the art and recent work on the subject.
Film formation from aqueous latices can be regarded as a process consisting of three stages: concentration, deformation, and coalescence as a result of interdiffusion. It is evident from recent literature that the second stage, i.e. the deformation of particles into polyhedrons and their dense packing, is still the subject of particularly controversial discussion, whereas substantial progress has been achieved in studies on the interdiffusion phase. Other questions that remain open are the formation of films from latices with structured particles, the location of auxiliaries in the film, and the formation of films from latices containing pigments or fillers.
