The Creation of an International Education Sector
Once a set of community institutions relevant only to a tiny minority, international schools have transformed. They are now economic entities that exist in an international school sector—a development less than 15 years old. Schools now compete for students in order to gain revenue, and this competition alters what the schools are and how they approach their work. The proliferation of over-the-top facilities gives expression to this competition. They have internationalized in a way that also implies de-nationalization. International schools are also increasingly tied into transnational education corporations (TECs) with interests in multiple countries. Before explaining in later chapters how this transformation has unfolded, in this chapter I document what has changed in international schools.
