Self-Organisation, Travel Behaviour and Social Exclusion

A number of studies have examined the built-environment, transport system and rules that affect travel behaviour, but few have considered how commuting patterns are influenced by the interactions between social structures (e.g., rules and resources) and individual actions. To fill this research gap, this chapter investigates the influence of the cycle of structures and actions on individual travel behaviours. Urban neighbourhoods in China are complex social systems. Self-organisation processes will occur when urban neighbourhoods face external interventions, such as urban redevelopment projects and the hukou system, which cause many residents in urban areas to take actions to cope with changes.
