Quantitative evaluation of PFS (Partial Floating Sheet-pile) Method under liquefaction
The Partial Floating Sheet-pile (PFS) method is one of the methods to install the sheet-piles near the toe of an embankment as a countermeasure to inhibit the embankment on the soft ground from settling. This method is a combination of partially floating sheet-piles with the end bearing sheet-piles. Originally, the PFS method was developed as an anti-consolidation countermeasure to inhibit settlement by the weight of a river embankment in a residential area. As the ground includes a sandy soil layer, the PFS method could be effective against not only over-consolidation but also liquefaction. However, there are still the needs for quantitative discussions to clarify the effectiveness against liquefaction. Therefore, the authors carried out numerical analyses using LIQCA3D17 in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the PFS method quantitatively. As a result, a settlement of embankment is inhibited by the application of PFS method as much as the conventional sheet-piles method.
