Abstract

Ever since humans learned to harness power from sources other than what their own muscles could provide, several important changes have occurred in the way in which societies are able to conduct a civilized life. This chapter briefly traces the energy and environmental consequences of these changes and highlights the role classical thermodynamics in assisting the engineer to meet the challenges posed by the changes.
