Classification and Mechanism of Sports-Related Eye Injury

Sports participation is one of the most common causes of eye injury, which affects young people mostly. Sports-related eye injury can lead to lifelong sequelae including severe visual impairment and even blindness. Although a number of protective measures have been taken to prevent the incidence of sports-related eye injury, i.e. eyeglasses and helmets, approximately 42,000 individuals sustain sports-related eye injuries in the United States annually according to the emergency departments records [1]. Eye injuries resulting from sports vary based on the age of the participants, types of sports and the area injured. Additionally, severity, treatment and visual prognosis are quite diverse with various sports. Hitherto, it is of great significance to clarify the classification and mechanism of sports-related eye injury thoroughly. This chapter carefully summarizes the current classification system and analyzes the mechanism involved in sports-related eye injury depending on the source of force, which intends to help the readers provide better care for the patients in future.
