Security and safety in Indonesia’s waters and maritime jurisdiction has long been a critical interest of not only the world’s biggest archipelagic country but also the international community. Choke points and sea lines of communication within Indonesia’s jurisdiction have long served as critical veins of global seaborne trade. Moreover, as the world’s geoeconomic and geopolitical centre of gravity is shifting from the Western Hemisphere to Asia, the importance of the security of Indonesian waters has become more evident.
