A test of differences between groups is one of the most commonly used statistical procedures. For instance, we observe that student academic performance at one school may be better than at another. We can confirm whether this observation is true by using Mann-Whitney U to test if there is a significant difference in the student performance at these two schools. If the result is statistically significant, we can determine which school is currently outperforming the other.
