Coastal Wetlands: Status and Strategies for Development

Abstract

Wetlands, a major feature of coastal landscape, are among the most important ecosystems harbouring biodiversity on Earth. They are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, which have for thousands of years provided human communities with provisioning, supporting, regulative services, and cultural services. They played a critical role in maintaining global biodiversity in the coastal areas partly through their rich productivity, which helps to support food chains, and partly through provision of habitats for specially adapted plant and animal species. In spite of its pivotal role in providing niche habitat and ecosystem services, they are under constant pressure from anthropogenic activities besides other natural forces. In brief, this chapter discusses the meaning and significance of wetlands with reference to tropical coastal areas, their formation and distribution, biodiversity, and issues of threats impacting wetlands and wetland conservation strategies.
