A number of theories have been presented over the years to explain the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Despite the research, the mechanisms underlying glaucomatous optic neuropathy GON remain unclear.

This chapter attempts to review the current scientific literature that provides evidence for and against the various proposed theories for pathogenesis of glaucoma.
